SAMPLE LESSON

I can read the word cat and can use the picture cue if I need to remember.

Give each student a set of the following cards.

Onset cards: b, f, h, m, p, r, s, v

Rime card: at

Have the student make the word cat from memory or using the label at the bottom. Then ask "If /k/-at says cat, what does /b/-at say?" Help the student move the cards to form the new word. Repeat this process with each onset card.

If you are concerned about comprehension, you can use the words in sentences or ask the children to help you. They can then illustrate a self-made "phonics" reader or a word family chart.
